Golden Eagle it is Then!

I should've commented yesterday that the only bird this resembled using my field guide was the golden eagle...looks like the consensus is that it is just that. I didn't say anything cause I didn't want to be disappointed when I was kindly informed it was something else, ha! So I'm excited that it's a golden eagle, a lifer for me! Yess!! Well, ok, as far as I know anyway.  ;o)  Thanks all for your input!

  1. Hi Jann, You certainly had some great finds at Custer! I'm loving the shots you took. The Eagle in flight is wonderful.

  2. Fantastic picture of a bird that is hard to photo.

  3. I've heard how hard it is to tell a golden from an immature bald eagle. I would have said bald on yours. With photos, you can't always tell the colors very well because of light and shadow and of course distance.

  4. Jann,
The Sibley field guides have a range of both Golden and Bald eagles in juvenile, 2nd year and adult plumages. I find it is the most helpful one when trying to do these kinds of ids. That white base of tail, dark band on end of tail feathers is just what Sibley illustrates for a juvenile golden. You certainly were in the right habitat for one.
