Prickly and Pretty

I thought I'd shared a pricklypear cactus flower pic in late June, but I didn't. Back then, I saw a few solid yellow ones in a few places. We have three types that grow in the area. This one, with the soft orange center, is definitely the prettiest. I believe this is the plains pricklypear. I came across this lone flower on Lame Johnny Rd., just E. of Custer Park, on Mon. You can't see them in this photo, but the cactus pad below the flower has long barbed spines. Oh, I managed to capture a bee in motion again, too, at the top left of the photo.

  1. I believe this is what's taking over one side of my house,I posted a photo of it on 5/24...When you have time look at it and let me know what you think...I never knew what type it was...
    Thanks Angie

  2. Oh, yes! There he is. I completly missed the bee in your photo. I love the color of this flower. The inside color is quite spectacular.

  3. Beautiful bloom. My father had a prickly pear in the garden of one of our former homes in northern Illinois. I hadn't known before how hardy they were. Always thought of them as desert plants.

  5. Sometimes it's difficult to get a flower shot without a bee. Beautiful, if prickly. ;)
